Negotiating Prices on 1stDibs

Understanding Offers vs. Orders

An offer is a negotiable proposal. You and the seller can go back and forth countering each other until you both agree

An order is created only after the offer is accepted and you both agree on price and shipping. That's when your purchase is confirmed and the item will ship

How to Make an Offer

If a seller is willing to negotiate, you'll see a Suggest a Price button below the Buy Now button. Click it, enter your price or discount percentage, and proceed to checkout. Complete your payment and shipping info to submit the offer. You won't be charged unless your offer is accepted.

What Happens Next

  • Seller accepts your offer → Your order is confirmed (after shipping approval if needed).
  • Seller sends a counteroffer → You can accept or counter back until you both agree.
  • Seller declines → Your offer is canceled and you aren't charged. You can make another offer.

Tips for Success

  • Keep it friendly. Sellers represent small businesses and value good relationships.
  • Avoid very low opening offers. Lead with a thoughtful price that shows you're serious.
  • Don't question the pricing. Vintage and custom items don't have set market prices. Accept the seller's listed price at face value.

What's Appropriate to Negotiate?

Sellers consider many factors when deciding if and how much to negotiate: their cost, the item's scarcity, how long it's been listed, and buyer interest. Offers that differ significantly from the listing price are likely to be declined. Lead with a thoughtful offer that shows you're serious about buying—this works far better than a lowball opening.
